Disinfection with ultraviolet system is the process of nullification of microorganisms without adding any chemical and oxidant to water.
By virtue of ultraviolet lamp positioned in a glass case similar to tube, UV beam, dosage of which is adjusted, is given to water entering into the device. These ultraviolet beams destroy the DNS structure and nullifies them. This way, approximately 99.9% disinfection efficiency is obtained.
Since the DNA structure of microorganisms exposed to 2500 – 2600 Angstrom wave length due to specifically-manufactured systems, they cannot function.
UV-C beams that have high energy with about 254 nm wave length, float into cell membrane of microorganisms and they are absorbed by nucleic acids that constitute DNA, especially "Timin". As a result of this energy transfer, DNA chain is demolished at several points. All activities, including reproducing, of an organism with a demolished DNA terminate and cell death occurs.
In order for microorganisms to be killed via this system, ultraviolet beam needs to directly fall on them. That is why, parameters such as residue, turbidity must be removed from water before water enters into ultraviolet system. Therefore it is recommended to use sand filter or cartridge filter before ultraviolet.
Another point to be taken into consideration regarding ultraviolet systems is the positioning the system to the final usage as much as possible. Furthermore, water coming out of the system must not enter into another unit that is open to atmosphere and it must be used without waiting. Periodical maintenance is essential in order to obtain good efficiency at ultraviolet units. Once a year, UV light must be changed and quartz glass must be cleaned periodically depending upon raw water quality. Unless it is not cleaned, efficiency of UV beam and the device will decrease.
